Everyone says they need to empty their mind to focus and achieve spiritual balance.
Is the mind an empty vessel? Do we wake up and suddenly, can empty the endless stream of thoughts, ideas and emotions we feel in mere minutes? I don't think so. No, mediation is really just focusing on accomplishing something.
If you want to focus by emptying your mind, that's fine.
If you focus by having your mind full of every dish of ideas, that is fine as well. I think there is a oversimplification of spiritual growth and this idea that there is a "one-size-fits-all" solution for everything.
Ah, the world of capitalism and consumerism has infiltrated every fiber of our beings. If we are refining ourselves, our minds, do we not need to break free of old habits to do so? If we just repeat what we have been told to do, well, you are just copy someone else's method of enlightment. Digging inwards and forming your own way is what I consider the essence of the spiritual path. So, mediation can be whatever you want it to be. For me, it is just focusing my intent to accomplish the things I want to do.
